The Public Relations Department of the Documentary, Experimental & Animation Film Center (DEFC) reported that an online workshop featuring Joshua Oppenheimer took place on the final day of the Cinema Verite Film Festival at Charsou Cineplex. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Ahmad Alasti, an Iranian distinguished professor of film and researcher.

The workshop focused on two Oscar-nominated films by Joshua Oppenheimer: "The Act of Killing" and "The Look of Silence." Both films explore the Indonesian mass killings that occurred between 1965 and 1966. These large-scale massacres targeted members and alleged sympathizers of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). Thousands of local vigilantes and Army units were responsible for the deaths of approximately one million people. In his films, Oppenheimer and his crew asked some of these perpetrators to re-enact their killings.

Oppenheimer's subsequent film, “The Look of Silence” (2014), serves as a companion piece to “The Act of Killing”. This film focuses on a man whose brother was murdered during these mass killings of 1965-66 in Indonesia. He seeks out individuals who can provide details about his brother's murder.

Joshua Lincoln Oppenheimer, an American film director based in Copenhagen, Denmark, is known for his powerful documentary films "The Act of Killing" and "The Look of Silence", both of which received Oscar nominations. These thought-provoking works have also earned Oppenheimer numerous accolades from prestigious film festivals such as the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), the European Film Awards, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and the Venice Film Festival, including Best Documentary awards and Grand Jury Prizes.

The 18th Iran International Documentary Film Festival- Cinema Verite was held from December 8th to 15th, 2024 at Charsou Cineplex, Tehran.
